Hay and Haylage
Forage makes up the largest proportion of any equine diet. Whether you choose hay or haylage it is important to buy good quality. We would always recommend that you base your horse/ponies diet on good advice from a vet or equine nutritionalist. Diets vary depending on breed, age, work-load and the amount of grazing available.
We offer a range of bale size and product to ensure your horse gets the correct forage.
Choosing your forage
Haylage is produced in a different way to hay, to provide a dust-free high feed value forage. Haylage is wilted grass, which is baled and then wrapped in plastic. This allows the grasses to go through a fermentation process, which produces a sweet, balanced feed, without the dust and spores often found in traditional hay. This helps with horses respiratory and digestive systems.
The fermentation process also means that haylage usually has a higher nutritional value than hay, with a lower sugar content. Most specifically with higher protein and energy content.
Haylage is baled with a higher moisture content than hay. This means it is a very palatable to the horse and can be fed without soaking; meaning less mess, low waste and much quicker.
Changing from hay to haylage
When making any change to an equine diet it should be a progressive introduction. We recommend that you introduce haylage over a period of more than one week. This allows the animal to gradually get used to the higher feed value. It will also help you to become used to the product and how best to feed and handle it.
How much to feed?
Always ensure the diet is suited to your horse/ponies specific needs. If you are unsure seek advice from a qualified equine nutritionalist or your vet. Typically forage is fed on a weight basis; a rough guide is 2% of body weight per day. The forage and hard feed elements of any equine diet should be compatible. If you require a nutritional analysis on any of our products please contact us.
